Okay.  How about this, then:

Buy a non-working white Unidisk 3.5 drive.  Then transplant a Mac 800K
mechanism into the casing.  This will work as long as the analog board in
the Unidisk 3.5 casing is intact.

I have done mechanism-transplants from Macs to Platinum 3.5 casing and
also to Unidisk 3.5 casing; both types succeeded.

:     Rewriting the firmware will not change things, even if you have an
