The copyright dates are the same as those shown on my Appleworks 2.0
startup screen. However, the screen does also say "V2.0" after the
"1983-86". Maybe you missed this. Anyway, you can be pretty sure it's one of
the version 2 releases.

Yes. I ran into the same problem with version 2.0 when expanding our GS
memory. The following fix was published in Computist several years ago ...

Do a CATALOG to find the length of your APPLEWORKS.SYS file. Write it down.

BLOAD APPLEWORKS.SYS at $1000 and go to the monitor.

Search for A2 02 1D (for example, enter \A2 02 1D\<1000.4FFFP ).
I found it at around $24F4.

Change the A2 02 1D to A2 02 1B and exit the monitor.

BSAVE APPLEWORKS.SYS, TSYS, A$1000, L <the length in decimal of the file>

What the mod does is to change the toolbox call starting at $24F4
(or wherever) from a check for Total Memory to a check for Available
Memory.

     Yes. It works fine.

You may be surprised. Appleworks 2.x, especially with some Time Out
add-ons, is a very nice word processor.
