Michael, just a guess: try shift-booting before running Spectrum
or ProTERM (or for ProTERM, you can also boot directly into ProDOS 8).
Even if you have a hardware handshake cable (which your Mac hi-speed
cable probably is), you will still lose characters if you have GS/OS
loaded up with interrupt sucking addons.  Culprits include screen
savers and menu-bar clocks.  A shift-boot or P8 boot does not load
them and solves the problem.

If you must have your addons (DA's, Control Panels, etc.), you will
have to carefully analyze which one(s) are causing the problem and
remove them.  Otherwise, shift-booting is a good way to avoid losing
characters and still have a loaded system for other purposes (just
reboot after you get offline).
