   Each slot can control _one_ item from the two selections: the builtin
port and 'your card'. You can only have one of those two active at once,
not both. The control panel should make that pretty clear-- you only
have two selections: 'builtin port' or 'your card', not 'both' or any
other selections. [As noted in the FAQ, some specific exceptions exist
for cards that don't need to be 'your card'ed, but those are pretty much
only accelerator and video boards]

   If you move your 5.25" controller card to another slot, set that
slot to 'your card', and can live without whatever builtin port you
just disabled, it should work fine. However, you've noted a lot of
very strange problems with your GS, from flakey memory and such. Thus,
I'm not making any 100% guarantees for behavior on your system, just
giving how it should work.
