This was covered in comp.risks.  Part of the sequence was to disable 
the volume before dialing out (if you can take control of the modem,
you can certainly turn the volume off).

As far as a "click" is concerned, my old Datalink 2400 [remember when
that was considered to be an ultra-fast modem?] makes a click, but my
Practical Peripherals 14400 certainly does not.
