Depends on the modems.  I have used back to back modems for testing
things here, and it's worked fine (in fact, I did Fido mail sessions
between 2 boxes this way, but that's getting off topic).  I've struck
few modems that require a line simulator, in practice.

... DOS:  Tells a computer what to do with itself!
