Let me present, for your consideration as the canonical nomenclature (tm),
the system I use:

Apple II - any ol' Apple II
Apple ][ - the first one
Apple ][ plus - the next one
Apple //e - the one after that
Apple //c - the little white one
Apple IIgs - the big one
Apple //c plus - the last one
IIe - the cool new Mac emulator
