Re: Why we have FAQs [Re: Slightly puzzled]

Nathan,

Like I said, *I* could care less about an FAQ. It's just the same as
every other free liberty people are entitled to - some people will use
them, and some won't. The only thing I don't particularly care for is
when I see people posting questions and getting borderline rude
responses then getting referred to the FAQ. To me, it has the same
effect of RTFM.

When I answer someone's question, or offer to help, I don't go out of my
way to make them feel like they're wasting my time.

Besides, what I had posted was not personally directed at you. It was a
general statement about what I have been witnessing in this and other
NGs. I can see how you would be concerned, being the maintainer of an
FAQ and all ...

It all boils down to a matter of choices. Present someone with a choice,
instead of a demand.

It would be ideal for everyone to meticulously follow the steps you
detailed in your post.

It would also be ideal for ... say, everyone to use their turn signal
when they are about to make a turn, or to make sure they only have 10
items or less when stepping into that express checkout lane. Some people
will, and some people won't.

Since the sudden tremendous interest in the internet, with everyone
going out and buying computers and getting 'on line', you're looking at
a LOT of new faces out there. Some will know what they are doing, some
won't. But if we use proper care, patience, and exercise 'net
etiquette', eventually all of the flames will subside and the usenet as
well as the internet in general will be a much more pleasant place in
which to interact.

- Tony :-)
