I strongly recommend you read the comp.sys.apple2 Frequently Asked
Questions (FAQ) at http://www.visi.com/~nathan/a2/faq/csa2.html It
answers your filetype questions, and probably also your next few sets
of questions.
Your local Apple II user group or dealer (call 1-800-SOS-APPL and
see if they can help) can provide you with copies of the OS. ProDOS
is generally more prevalent for newer pieces of software, DOS 3.3 for
older. [Also, most commercial programs were self-booting (they had
their own OS, sometimes DOS 3.3 or ProDOS, sometimes some strange
hack)]
