Using Apple 2c floppy on GS?

I just bought an Apple 2GS CPU at a thrift shop.  I am trying to use an Apple 
2c external floppy drive(third party) plugged into the floppy port on the back.

Can this drive be used on this CPU? If not, did I fry my port when I plugged 
it in and turned on the computer?

I just read the FAQ, but I didn't see this specific combination mentioned.
