It's really not recommended. Some programs requiring an Enhanced
//e just want the extra instructions of the 65C02. Others want the
newer ROMs. Others will look _REAL_ odd without mousetext's special
characters. Some want all the functionality.
I think the enhancement kit might be selling for <$50; you might
also want to check out local garage sales for cheap //es-- you might
be able to pick up an enhanced //e for <$50, including keyboard,etc.
