I wouldn't call for hardware mods just yet.  I used a DuoDisk successfully
on a IIgs without clipping any resistors; although this was in a
combination with two 3.5" drives.  (He did say he had a "newer" DuoDisk.)

Has anyone checked to see if a single 3.5" drive followed by a DuoDisk is
a legal combination?  I would, but I don't have my IIgs owner's manual
anymore.  (Can you believe that someone would steal empty computer boxes
from a storage place?)  I remember that 5.25" drives have to be last on the
chain.  Although a single 5.25" drive can follow a single 3.5" drive, the
DuoDisk may have tighter restrictions. 

I would try hooking the DuoDisk directly to the disk port (without the 
3.5" drive).  If that works, it would certainly eliminate a lot of other 
variables...
