Alcohol certainly would be better than WD40.  Personally, though, I use
DEOXIT with CRAMOLIN for many electronic applications (in addition to
alcohol). If you do use alcohol, get pure isoproyl, not rubbing alcohol
which contains a high percentage of water.

Sometimes, none of those tricks work. If you have the technical skills to
do so, you can remove the faulty switch from the circuit board, take the
switch apart, clean, adjust, and reassemble. I do that sometimes. Be
warned, though, that there is room for error and permanent damage.
