Hey, Mitch... my IIc went from a 1200bps modem to a 14.4 quite some time 
ago.  And at the time, it tore along effortlessly.  It does work.

I used a LineLink 144e and ProTERM set to 19,200 bps.  I thought it was 
awesome for the little IIc to run with the crowd.  I never had problems 
with losing characters on downloads/uploads.  The only time I 
sometimes noticed character loss was while using Lynx here at Internex.
So I occasionally had to make use of the CTRL-L screen refresh command.

I found the IIc to be quite reliable at 14,400 bps.  File transfers were 
also always around the 1,200 ~ 1,500 bps range from what I recall.  In 
fact the slowest thing about my IIc was disk access.
