Most likely, the printer has lost it's sensor magnet.  Take the cover off,
and look underneath.  There should be a little channel projecting down in
the front right of the cover.  There should be a little brown magnet glued
in there.  All of them I've seen are the type of magnet you would normally
find on the back side of refridgerator magnets.  There are 2 fixes I can
think of.

1. Get one of those cheap 'fridge magnets and glue that part inside the
channel on the case.  Of course, take the funny plastic shape off the
magnet first :)

2. For those techies out there, take apart the IW, and remove the switch
connected to the top cover.  Replace this with a short circuit.

I'm not positive if you need to replace the switch with a shor, or an
open, but if your trying this route, you should be able to figure that out
yourself.

I think you want to leave this alone.  As I recall, it adjusts where the
ribbon is held when things are printed.  You would fiddle with this if you
had troubles with a color print.  Otherwise, it should be fine as is.  Not
positive, tho.  Other thoughts?
