Re: Miserable AWGSII Word Processor (Please Read!)

Unlike the other people who have responded, I'm NOT going to tell you to
go get a $3,000 computer with a big hard drive and so forth. You've
already indicated that's not really waht you want to do...

First of all, you've got a text problem related to the IIgs screen
resolution. This is where you need to ask yourself what you really want
from this word processor. Do you want raw word-processing power, or do
you want pretty pictures? I'm guessing that you want word-processing power.

If that is the case, then I suggest that you download a copy of Apple
Writer ][e, which is available from the better Apple ][ FTP sites (there's
a list floating around somewhere...and Apple Writer is probably on
ground.isca.uiowa.edu, which is a good starting point). It's text based,
so it is very legible. It's not WYSIWYG unless you have your margins set
to an 80-character line, but it works very well.

The downside to all of this is that for really long scripts, you might
find it to your advantage to split the file up into smaller chunks...in
fact, I'm not sure how much memory AppleWriter can see on a IIgs...you
might have to split the file up. But that will give you better
performance anyway.

The files that come out of Apple Writer are plain text files, which can be
imported into just about anything...including, for instance, GraphicWriter
III on the IIgs, or you can file-transfer to a Macintosh or PC and load
the files into Word Perfect or Word or PageMaker or whatever without too
much trouble.

Your problem CAN be solved. Heck, my Mom writes novels on her 128k 1MHz
][e running PFS:Write (which I do NOT recommend). The Apple ][ was the
first computer to be adopted by writers in general because until Word
Perfect was cleaned up on the PC, the best word processors ran on Apples.
And these old machines still work just fine.

But then, you've been running an XT, so you know exactly what I'm talking
about. Until recently, that machine worked fine, too.
