I had this happen to me once in a while.  I finally broke down, backed
up all the files i needed from the drive, reformatted, and copied them
back on.  it worked.  and since it was a recurrent problem (affiliated with
MAF (kind of buggy programming language), near as i could tell...), i got
pretty good at reformatting the disk.
