I got an Apple II+ because my dad, basically, gave it to me at age 12. When
I was ... uh ... 16 or so, I thought about buying myself another computer.
My option would have been a 286-12 MHz 0 Wait states (state of the art way
back then ;-), but friends convinced me to get a IIgs instead. At that
time, it still looked like it had a future. It hadn't been out all that
long, either.
Now it's almost 10 years later, and I still have my IIgs. Why? It's fun!
It's a fiddler's dream! Try creating your own PCI cards and you will know
what I mean. With the GS, I've got a chance of doing hardware: The bus
interface is dead simple and requires nothing more than TTLs and a GAL or
two. On a PC, you can forget home tinkering: The big boys have been there
before you.
Mind you, I do have a PC. I use it for Internet access and games. Once I
get a bigger hard drive, I plan to use it for Linux or FreeBSD (any time
soon now, really :). But I still have and like my GS. It's just so much
fun.
