Well, I can go one better than that!
Get this: I have an ImageWriter II in the Printer Port, and a parallel
card in slot 2. I have Slot 2 set to "Your Card" in the Control Panel,
and a DeskJet 540 connected to the parallel card (it's an Apple Parallel
Card, BTW).
I have told ProTERM than I have an Apple Parallel Card in Slot 2, and
everthing works! My modem initializes just fine, because ProTERM is
talking directly to the Modem Port, not "Slot 2". I can even capture text
to the DeskJet while reading a file. This trick also works with Spectrum,
and, I suspect, with ANSITerm, although I haven't tried it with that. It
DOESN'T work with AppleWorks GS' communications module, because that IS
addressing Slot 2 rather than the Modem Port itself.
In AppleWorks 5.0, it's even better. I have four printers installed:
ImageWriter (slot 1), DJ Portrait & DJ Landscape (slot 2), and disk
printer. I can swap between them without going anywhere near the Control
Panel.
If I hadn't tried it and seen all this for myself I wouldn't have
believed it. This machine is nothing short of miraculous!
