Not true. You have to give up slot 7 for the AppleTalk firmware, and
the firmware does borrow the "screen holes" for the slot that is being
used for the network. This prevents the use of most character I/O
cards (serial cards, parallel cards, etc.) in the slot, but you can use
most disk I/O cards, including hard drive controllers.

[I assume you mean 6 for the AppleDisk 5.25]
Move the Vulcan to slot 1 - it will work fine. Then set slot 7 to
AppleTalk, slot 1 to Your Card, and plug the network into the printer port.

Correct. The AppleTalk firmware lives in the slot corresponding to
the port it is using, and there is no double use of screen holes.
You can _also_ set slot 7 to AppleTalk, but this is only required if
you are running rather old software that thinks the IIgs AppleTalk
firmware is in slot 7 (e.g. Aristotle, unless it has been updated).
If you do this, you end up using two complete slots. The physical
slots can be used for accelerators or other cards that don't require
any slot-based I/O.

A complete swap of the motherboard is required.
Alltech Electronics offers ROM 1 to ROM 3 motherboard upgrades. Shreve
Systems probably does as well.
