   You'd have to give up a port for the connection in a Rom 03 also;
there are only 2 serial connections in the back of all GS's. This
whole thing about giving up multiple slots is a bunch of hooey foisted
upon us by the Rom 03 crazies. Slot 7, when appletalked, cannot have
a card of your type in it. Minus one 'slot.' But, the one you put the
Appletalk cable into (1 or 2) must be of type 'Your card,' so you get
back a useable slot there.

Since you have a directly connected printer on slot 1, I'm assuming
it's set to 'Printer Port.' Now, here's how to get things working
nicely without any problems: leave slot 1 unaffected. Set Slot 7 to
'Built in Appletalk,' and Slot 2 to 'Your Card.' Now, plug the
Appletalk connection into the modem port (slot 2), your Vulcan into
slot 2, and set the startup slot to 2. [And remember to turn the power
off before unplugging cards and the like :) ] If you've got something
that just uses a slot for power, like a lot of sound cards, slot 7
can have stuff put in it.

Now, reboot, and you have an appletalk connection and HD at once.
Was that so hard? If you had a Rom 03, you'd set slot 2 to 'Appletalk'
and leave the HD in slot 7. The investment to upgrade from Rom 01 to 3
(basically, the motherboard is swapped, much harder than moving one
card) versus moving a card from one slot to another; I'd pick moving a
card (a one-time deal also) anyday for ease.

Bottom line: One slot must be switched to Appletalk to get it working
in either a Rom 01 or 3. In either case, that slot is still usable for
any card that just grabs power from the motherboard, and it's slightly
less work to do it on a Rom 3. The Rom 3 fanatics can go shout their
propaganda elsewhere, thank you. :)
