Get a book which describes the basic information you need. The II+
reference manual isn't available any more, but you should be able to
make do with the IIe reference. The slot interface is almost identical.
Another good book to get would be "Understanding the Apple II" by Jim
Sather (published by Quality Software, who are out of business, but
Byte Works has the remaining stocks). It has some good background
information.
Ideally, you should get both books. The reference manual has the
crucial details about pin numbering, drive capacity of each pin,
timing details, etc. The other book is good for understanding what to
do with the slots.

The grey IIe (with numeric keypad) came out in 1987, I think. Earlier
IIes used the original case, which is beige in colour.
