Before anyone can give you any kind of reliable advice you must find out what
kind of wordprocessor was used and hopefully the version.
 
Beyond that, though there is usually more than one route, the key is often
"ASCII" or "TEXT".  These are terms for a standard format that most word
processors can, or routinely do, save or "print to disk".  If you can find
any reference to this in documentation, a borrowed disk, or looking with a
file utility then you are on a workable track.
 
Teachers most commonly used Bankstreet Writer or AppleWorks and before that
AppleWriter, if that rings a bell with your friend.
