HELP please-
For the past two days, I have gotten just about every error known
to GS users when booting the system. Firstly, I have:
GS rom 3
slot 1 empty (ext hayes 14.4 faxmodem)
slot 2 Grappler Plus (HP 550C)
slot 3 ZIP GSX 8/16
slot 4 empty
slot 5 empty (AE HD 3.5")
slot 6 ramfast rev C 3.0e (?, next-to-latest rom...)
octoram w/ 8 256k simms for total of 3200k.
After the first few problems I noticed that some files had had thier
names changed to non-prodos things; such as:
GS.OS -> GS>OS
Finder.Root -> Finder>Root
animedesk -> animedes}
etc. Mostly only the root dir, the system dir, and the dir with the
source code I was last working on. Which led me to believe that I
either had a memory problem (the octoram's simm slots are known to
be lose) or a ramfast problem (I have sent it in to Jawaid before.)
Concering the types of errors at bootup:
various ramfast memory error msgs (07, 0C, 0D, 0E, 17, etc)
random crashes to monitor halfway through GS/OS boot
hangs after booting finder
crashes to monitor after booting p8 (I have a pre-gs/os basic selector)
and then I saw the p8 screen crash, with at the bottom "Copyryght ..."
This led me to think that the ramfast's ram cache was bad, and was
randomly trashing a bit here and there to 'bump up' a character
every now and then. Note that trashed characters always turn into
the same things; . -> >, k -> }, h -> x, i -> y, etc.
Is there any way to test the chips on the ramfast?
Should I find the appropriate TI ram and substitute?
Or send the thing back to Jawaid (again)?
PLEASE help, any info/advice is welcome. I can't even run
Proterm anymore...
