I don't know for sure, but I think-

The floppy drive problems started on the AV Macs and were/are related
to a new version of the SWIM. (I think the SWIM III.) Some/all models
released after the AV`s use the SWIM II. I haven't read much about
this is many months. The aesthetic problems with the floppy drives
are that Apple is now using Epson made drives in _all_ Macs.
They don't automatically `inject' so Mac cases now have deep slits cut
in them so you push the disk further.

I think the AV`s could do disk i/o with interrupts enabled or something.
Try comp.sys.mac.hardware for details and way too much traffic.

The Epson drives are also smaller. They were first used on Powerbooks
to save space, now they cut costs/corners on all Macs (repeat, sorry).

I'm wondering, which version of the SWIM is on the Apple II card?

I believe the 500 MB HD Apple uses is IBM made, but I'm not too
informed lately. Anyone know who makes the 700 MB drive?
