Perhaps the jumper-block is missing from his Extended 80 columns
card? I had identical problems before I added a jumper to my card in
one of my Apple IIe's. The pins on the card need to be connected in order
for Double-Hi-Res to function (newer versions of the card do not require
a jumper-block placed on pins, and sometimes require you remove it). There
are two possible causes:
A) The jumper-block is missing on his Extended 80 columns card
B) The motherboard does not support Double-Hi-Res (original Rev 'A')
Either of the two _will_ cause vertical strips to appear when
trying to display Double-Hi-Res graphics. Usually you just see the first
Hi-Res page displayed with lines through it...
ps - Yes, Sierra's "King's Quest I" does indeed make use of DHR graphics.
