No doubt Second Sight will be available first (hopefully before
the year's end), but the only software for it will be a mere GS/OS graphic
viewer! It's questionable whether you'll be able to do much more than have a
quick peek at graphics with it (ie, could it be a 640x200x4 desktop program
that just switches to SS-mode to display a full screen image...like 3200 images
now?). My guess is soon after it's release, we'll see discQuest support and
GNO drivers to support it's IBM ANSI text modes -- later a complete update
to GNO would offically support text and graphics. Sequential System/Procyon
is obviously going to have to start quickly updating their software to support
the SS, a GIF/JPEG viewer isn't enough to interest buyers! In fact, I'm sure
a majority of people out there are going to sit back and see what software is
released before purchasing a Second Sight card...
Personally, the first programs I'd like to see support the
Second Sight are:
Platinum Paint (16.7m color palette wheel, 256 standard palette, higher
resolution support, additional tools and functions found
in most Macintosh software. Not looking for Photoshop in
the next PP revision, but slowing adding advanced features
is acceptable).
AppleWorks GS (word-processor module with true WYSIWYG and page-preview.
WestCode's Pointless should be updated to work with it).
ProTERM (8-bit) (Very simply, a modular driver to use IBM text modes for
color ANSI and VT-100. Perhaps even add an option to use
standard Apple II mousetext or IBM 80x25 ANSI text. InTrec
should be able to address this quickly, nothing very complex
about this really).
The Finder (This would require QuickDraw II to be patched, but perhaps
a temporary patch to only the Finder could be done? Or at
least a keep the same 640x200 resolution but with 256 color
support. Of course I'd like to see 640x480x256 :)
GNO/ME (A quick patch to use 80x25, etc text modes, then of course
support for graphics).
This is what I'd want to see within the few months after it's release. Just
something to get started with. Of course if someone wants to write some
games, by all means do so! :-) A re-release of Brutal Deluxe's "Cogito"
could be done almost immediately I'm sure. I'd also be interested in seeing
BurgerBill having a go at the card!
