Re: Doom Conversion (was Dragons Lair II)
I think there will be more support for the Second Sight card, since it is
1. affordable
2. upgrades are viable (Sequential doesn't have to stop for funds a lot, etc.)
3. offers higher resolutions
4. affordable affordable affordable
I don't think it is feasible to spent 300+ dollars on a video card for any
computer, especially for the GS, since it obviously isn't going to have a
bazillion games come out for it because of a video card's release. If these
cards had been released a while ago, yes there may have been a lot more games
dedicated to using the card(s).
$179, on the other hand, is feasible for the GS market, and more people will
buy what they can afford :) Also, it is the only card which has a scheduled
date to come out that has ads, etc. A press release doesn't tell me anything
until I see something put forth, although the TR looked very promising in the
II Alive video of Apple Expo West 92 (maybe it was 93).
All things said, the point is that if anything will be developed for these new
graphic modes on the GS, it is more feasible to write code to take advantage of
the SS card, which will be available soon and has a strong backing (a company
with many solid products and excellent technical support). DOOM is possible,
and it would be worth it if it used the SS, not the TR, albeit without the
blitter chip (but it can do blits, but without a dedicated blitter chip, at
least that's what I've heard (foot in mouth)).
DOOM... cool... but needs a SS. If anything, that's the card people will buy
-- and for those that don't buy it, you'll have Wolf 3D :)
Just my 2c at 2:30 in the morning... :)
