I understand that the ROMs on the Vulcan would only accept certain
makes/models of drives, and only of a single size.  Whether the ST3144A
is of this group, I don't know.

That would probably be the incompatible size problem.

If you can't get your new drives to work with the Vulcan, you may want
to consider getting a TurboIDE card as a replacement for the Vulcan
controller.  Although it's yet another expense, it's reputed work with
any IDE drive up to about 256Meg, and it can have two drives attached,
rather than just one.
