I recall reading in the Apple II history files that Apple licensed the
technology from Zip but didn't license the Zip Chip because Apple feared
that Zip wouldn't be able to keep up with the demand. So, Apple placed the
cache and extra goodies off the chip and on the motherboard so that they
could use a standard 4 MHz 65C02 in the IIc+
