Which 3.5" Drive?

Hi all,

I've been trying to hook up a 3.5" drive to my Apple IIgs.  It's an
older Apple 800k beige external.  I've tried setting the startup
slot to various values including the smart port, disk port and 
the scan option.  None of these work.  At best the drive whirls
for a moment and I get the "Check Startup Device" screen with a
sliding apple character.  Do I need a newer drive?  A platinum
colored one perhaps?  If so, is there any particular version that
I should get?
