There was a bootable disk in the drive when you tried booting from that drive,
wasn't it?

To boot from a 3.5" drive connected to the smartport
1. set the startup slot in the Control Panel to "Slot 5".
2. insert a bootable disk in the drive. A bootable disk is ProDOS-formatted and
has an operating system like ProDOS 8 or GS/OS on it.
3. Type OA-CTRL-Reset.

The drive should start to whirl. After a few seconds some kind of
message about the OS currently loading should appear on the screen.
