I've sorta been having problems like these myself; I just chalked it
up to 800K disks being phased out by Apple. Anyhow, here's what was happening
to me: I could create 800K HFS disks fine on my GS, and take them over to
the lab in my dorm. Various modles of Macs, from Mac + to IIci read them
fine... When I put the disk in the Q660AV, it accepted the disk fine. But,
the first time I tried to write to it, the system went glacial for about
10-15 seconds, and gave me a "Damaged Disk" warning.

After a bunch of these things, I then just switched to 1.44MB disks,
which are read fine by the Q660AV and my floptical. I think it may be
another sign of Apple trying to shrug off things they don't really care
too much for....
