I had one of these too ... replacing the 65C02 chip fixed it.

As far as lobotomizing these drives goes ... simply removing the Unidisk card
won't work ... you need to insert the daisy chain card the 800k Apple drives
(platinum) use as this allows the drive addressing (d1, d2, d3, etc.) 
otherwise the Apple can't address the drive.  And you can't daisy chain other
drives.

Note that you DON'T need a daisy chain card on a mac as the mac only allows
a single external floppy and no 5.25" drives.
