Easy solution to this problem:

When chaining 3.5" and 5.25" drives from the IIgs drive port, the 3.5"
drives must go FIRST.

If you have a UniDisk 3.5 drive, it must be connected after any Apple
3.5 Drives and before any 5.25" drives.

This is documented in the "Setting up your IIgs" book that comes with
the computer, and is also mentioned in Chapter 12 (Troubleshooting) and
Appendix A (Connecting Additional Devices) of the ROM 03 "IIgs Owners
Reference". I can't find any mention of the required order in the the
ROM 01 "IIgs Owners Guide".

The 5.25" and UniDisk 3.5 drives don't pass through all the signals
required by Apple 3.5 drives.
