Apple II+ questions

I have an Apple II+ which I am trying to put back into service.  I have
three questions I hope someone would be kind enough to answer.

(1)  How does (if it does) a joystick attach to a II+?  I see a 8-pin
"GAME I/O" socket on the motherboard, but I'm at a loss as to how a
joystick would connect to this.

(2)  I seem to remember that software once existed to allow a II+ to
run Appleworks.  Does anyone know what software I'm talking about or
in the alternative, how can Appleworks be used with a II+?

(3) What's involved in modifying a II+ with the "shift key modification"
to allow upper and lower case letters and where can I obtain the parts
necessary?
