Are you by any chance using High-density diskettes instead of DS/DD 
diskettes?  The IIGS doesn't care but if you format an HD diskette using 
GS/OS then the Mac won't recognize it at all.  It expects to find a 1.44Meg 
format on an HD diskette.  Of course, if you format an HD diskette on the 
Mac it will be in 1.44Meg format and the IIGS won't recognize it.  I 
routinely trade files back and forth between my office Mac (IIci) and my 
IIGS at home.  I have successfully used disks formatted on either the Mac 
or the GS. The only failures I have experienced occurred when I tried using 
HD diskettes on the IIGS.  By way of experiment I just covered the extra 
hole on an HD and formatted it in the Mac then removed the cover and tried 
to read it -- the Mac gagged and said it was improperly formatted.
