Appletalk is a very nice alternative?  I"m not too sure of that, having 
dealt with both AT and IEEE 802.3.   At has a 2MB/sec transfer rate, while
IEEE 802.3 has a 10MB/sec transfer rate over level four unshielded twisted
pair.

Of course both systems work... but personally,I'd rather drive a V-8
than some silly little 4 cylinder.
