Actually, don't you need AppleShare 3.x to actually BOOT the GS over the
network?  Personal File Sharing with System 7.1, I think, doesn't allow GS
Booting--there's nowhere to store the code.

But I do agree- a hard drive with the GS is necessary.  With a 3.5" 800K boot
disk for the GS to access the Mac's hard disk, there's no room for the Finder,
so everything on the GS is run through the System 6 Launcher-no place to do
file manipulation except from the Mac desktop.
