Can I suggest (and make a heartfelt request) that it coulod perhaps do
with a "unknown pre-configured serial card so don't try to be clever"
option?

Gotcha.
Looks like at I'm at something of an impasse then.
I don't suppose anyone in the UK has a Super Serial card they'd care to
donate?
Or a bootable disk with a comms package on?
Actually, given that all I want to do is display what the serial port is
receiving, could I just do that in Apple BASIC? Does it have something
along the lines of fgetc() ?

words 'Single Malt' in the name]
