It's IDE but it looks like AE tried to force you to buy their upgrade
by making the ROMs so that they wouldn't work with a larger HD
than what came with that card. Someone came across a card with
the EPROM for a 100mb drive a while back. It let you use a wider
variety of drives. All my hardware's in storage right now but
someone here  should be able to burn you a copy of it.
A search of comp.sys.apple2 will give you a list of the drives we
found that worked.

The drive parameters were hard-coded into the ROM routines.

It's possible that this was done overtly to keep users from
upgrading their drives inexpensively, but it was also true that
standard methods for reading drive parameters from the drive
itself were just beginning to become common (remember how you
used to have to tell the BIOS that you had a "type 44" drive,
etc.?).
