Most everything has been said, but one thing has not:

If that 74LS125 in the drive is blown which is the most common culprit,
that drive will EAT DISKS from that moment on. Every disk that spins in
it after that chip is dead will be DELETED, even if it is write
protected. So be careful with experimenting.
