I just tried one from my Apple IIGS and it worked fine. In fact it 
worked better than the Mac Plus's built-in drive. The disk I used (a Mac 
System disk from Apple) gets an error during mounting on the built-in 
drive (even after cleaning it) but works fine on the external Apple 3.5 
Drive.
