The reason that Apple doesn't include those functions as standard is 
that the vast majority of people simply have no use for them. It 
certainly hasn't hurt the iPod's sales much, but I'm sure you'll be 
happy to know that Apple does now sell an add-on FM radio receiver for 
the iPod. An external receiver may sound clunky at first, but it doubles 
as a remote control and integrates properly so that the tuning controls 
and display are on the iPod. Similarly there are third-party audio 
recorders which are also supported by the iPod's firmware.
