The initial bootstrap process is definitely a tricky set of steps.  KPR
pointed me to a USB-serial adapter vendor that has very reasonable
prices, so I bought a couple of those and will post OSX-specific
bootstrapping instructions when the adapters arrive and I can get a
spare evening.

There are other Mac bootstrapping options, too... but it all kind of
depends on what hardware, cables, etc. you have on hand.
