Yes as a way to see if the disk was there and spinning. I head it mentioned that it could be used to determine if the disk was up to speed to begin reading valid bytes before the 'normal' delay...
Could there even be a protection scheme based on such a thing?
While Ive never hear of one, maybe we could use that thought in generating the emulation or hardware to make a new protections scheme. ;)
