My filters catch about 75% but there was a day or two last week when I was getting 5000+.

It's hard to believe I've been "lucky" for so many years!

Although it's a little tricky figuring out how to tell, I'd be willing
to bet that your spam explosions came from some other source than bots
scanning your newsgroup postings.

I think this "threat" is mostly urban myth.
