It just didn't like anything but the 20 MB CF card.
Here are the ones I tried, all Sandisk.

8 MB, 16 MB, 20 MB, 32 MB, 64 MB, and 128 MB.

Even using the 100 MB Gold ROM version and software,
it wouldn't detect a drive attached, just this 20 MB
CF card and even that was flakey, but it works.

And, strangely enough, it works in all Apple IIs. Weird.
