Good point... I was thinking mainly of cheap home theatre systems that
often have only preset equalization.

Almost completely off-topic: a bass-playing acquaintance of mine
recently bought a fairly high-end bass amp that had the equivalent of a
"mega bass" control. He was pretty disappointed to find that all that
extra sub just turned the band's sound into a wall of mud and actually
made it harder to pick out what he was playing from the overall noise.
