I think it's always a good idea to have your ftp program default to
binary since it does no harm to text files. I know that a lot of
browsers will try to download almost everything as text, which is
generally not good for things like disk images and Shrinkit archives,
but you can usually specify how files are dealt with in the preferences.
For things like Shrinkit archives, I think you want the MIME type set to
"application/octet-stream", so the browser will know you want it saved
to disk as binary (subject to correction by anyone who knows better).
